Speaker: Sara Usman

Topic: Resiliency in Times of Adversity

Bio: Sara Usman is a women’s right activist and works as Program Policy Development Consultant for the provincial government in Manitoba. After many years of domestic restriction and abuse, she left her marriage for safety and started to face the judgment of her community, family and friends for going against accepted gender roles and traditions. In recent months, she has started to go public with her story of domestic abuse and online harassment. As part of her recovery, but also to raise public awareness, she is willing to be a public speaker at small progressive gatherings of people working on women’s rights and related policy issues. More specifically, she can provide insight into women’s roles in different cultures, what domestic abuse really is and how society still negates it. She is interested in raising awareness regarding the effects of community isolation, distribution of intimate images on women and the need of tackling domestic violence differently in the era of technology. She is a strong voice for women who stand up for themselves but get caught in a complexed policing system. She is an eloquent presenter and would speak for thirty minutes and is open to questions from participants.
